About the owner…

“Hi, I’m Sophia Sheldon! I’m the owner of Rise and have been teaching group fitness since 2021, though my love for it started long before I ever put on a mic.

I was born and raised in Santa Rosa, California. After graduating from the University of Oregon where I studied Communications and Business, I moved to Portland and began my career as a Talent Agent at a sports and lifestyle modeling agency in Lake Oswego—all while working as Lead Instructor at a local cycling studio, and working front desk at another gym. What started as a part-time passion for fitness quickly became the career I was meant to pursue!

In 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to take over Rise from our founder, Kelsey Maynard, and continue building the community she created. In 2024, I opened our second location in Beaverton, Oregon with Hanna Antolik and Whitney Johnson. Today, my passion extends far beyond teaching classes. I love developing our instructors, creating unforgettable class experiences, and building environments where people feel challenged, seen, supported, and genuinely excited to show up.

My goal has always been to make Rise a place where fitness feels empowering, welcoming, and FUN—whether it's your very first class or your one thousandth. There's nothing more rewarding than watching someone discover they're capable of more than they ever thought possible, and getting to be a small part of that journey is something I'll never take for granted.

When I'm not at the studio, you may find me sipping some wine in Sonoma, enjoying great coffee up in Portland, wakesurfing on Clearlake, or maybe hiking Gunsight Rock! I'm a huge fan of The Office, Dwight is my favorite character (I dressed up as him for Halloween several years back). I have been vegan for over seven years, and am passionate about animal welfare. I’m incapable of not petting a dog when I see one. I was a barista for 3 years and can pour pretty latte art. I never say no to great Indian food or a spicy margarita (just not necessarily together lol).

If you’ve read this far, thank you. If you haven’t visited our studio yet, I hope you come try a class and introduce yourself! I am committed to making Rise the best it can possibly be and I always welcome feedback, so feel free to email me at info@risecycleco.com or share your ideas with me at the studio. I can’t wait to sweat with you soon!”
